UCC student dies after contracting meningitis
The death has sparked a number of calls to a meningitis helpline.
A CORK STUDENT died today after contracting meningitis.
In a statement, University College Cork (UCC) said:
“UCC wishes to confirm the sad passing of one of our students earlier today, following a brief illness with meningitis. The University community offers its sincere condolences to the bereaved family, friends, classmates and staff in the school of the student who has died.
Information and advice from the HSE (South) Department of Public Health has been distributed to all students via their student e-mail, and is reproduced on UCC Student Health and main UCC social media channels.
A number of people have called a meningitis helpline since the news emerged locally.
The Meningitis Research Foundation (MRF) said a number of calls had been made to its helpline in the wake of the passing of a female student.
The group said it was saddened to hear of the student’s death and said it would like offer its sincerest condolences to her family.
A statement from MRF read: “We were saddened to hear of the death of a student in UCC from meningitis. We would like to offer our sincere condolences to her family and friends; our thoughts are with them at this extremely difficult time.”
Meningitis is the inflammation of the lining around the brain and spinal cord. It shares many of the symptoms of other, more common, everyday illnesses such as the flu or even a hangover.
MRF said it supports people affected by this disease through in-depth information and support.
